ICT Barriers in South African Education

Information and Communication Technology integration in Education is the use of technology tools in teaching and learning general content subjects. the ICT integration benefit both teachers and learners, it motivate learners to learn and it promote both independent work and team work, it also increases teacher's efficiency in lesson preparation.

Factors prohibiting the successful integration of ICT in SA schools



• Poor proficiency in English language
• Resistance change
• Irrelevance of the curriculum and inadequate teacher preparation
• Lack of infrastructure
• Lack of time
• Lack of confidence
• Limited knowledge on how to make full use of ICT
• Lack of computer facilities and related soft ware
• Lack of technical support
• Lack of a clear implementation roadmap




During my schooling years I had no access to any technology at school, there were no any kind of technology that was available for learners to use. We were told that every time they bought computers for my school they got stolen. The other challenge was that we as learners were not really interested and we were ignorant when it comes to ICT, I guess maybe it was because we were from the rural areas and most of all we were never inspired by anyone, we thought only about writing notes, studying and getting to matric these were the only things we cared about and careless about anything else that came afterwards, and I know most students can agree with me.

Due to this challenges there have been critics to the use of technology in education.

My Schooling at Chayaza Senior Secondary School in Mpumalanga a journey continued

I matriculated 2011 at Chayaza Senior Secondary School in Mpumalanga, my subjects include: English first additional language, Afrikaans first additional language, Tsonga home language, Life Orientation, Mathematical Literacy, Business Studies, Travel and Tourism and Consumer Studies.

My school did not have any type of educational technology that could be used in any of our subject classes, what i can say most importantly with my school is that, My school has a variety of hard working, respectful, supportive, caring and friendly teachers. Even though we did not use any kind of technology i can say they were able to provide us with the materials needed for our curriculum, we had textbooks and sometimes they provided us with some copies.

Not to forget my honorable principal, he was an old man but that did not count because he was dedicated to his job, he shows loyalty and devotion in our presents and he is a courageous old man. during my matric, we did not have that much infrastructure at school but that moment our school became our home, we eat, sleep bath wake up and do all the normal things we do at home, my principal was also there with us to make sure that we were safe and being taken care of.
